FLUSHING WATER
MAINS
It’s that time of
year when District personnel engage in a water main flushing program to
flush possible sediment build up or stagnant water from portions of the
system. Good water practice and the Department of Health Services
require periodic flushing of the pipeline system. District crews will
begin flushing in the upper portion of the system at Pentz and Skyway
and work south through the Town. We expect to flush half the system
this year and our goal is to flush the entire system.
Flushing will begin on February 27, 2006 and continue for approximately two
weeks. Customers can expect cloudy to dirty water and reduced pressures
for a short period in the immediate area of flushing which is normal.
Should any of these conditions persist beyond one day, customers should
contact the District office. Customers should understand that the use
of the term “dirty water” does not mean there is dirt in the system.
This dirty appearance is due to the build up of iron oxides, (rust) in
the water from the large number of steel pipes in the system. All water
is completely filtered prior to entering the system and far exceeds the
filtration requirements set by the State.
While cloudy
water may appear, there should be no alarm regarding the safety of the
water for consumption. Disinfection through chlorination will, of
course, continue and the chlorine level will be slightly raised as
further precaution.
Careful
attention should be paid to the water when washing clothes as cloudy
water could stain certain items. Contact the District office for daily
flushing areas. Once customers know the day their neighborhood will be
affected, they can help by notifying neighbors who may not be aware of
the flushing.
